With no interest from colleges following his senior season at St Thomas Academy in St. Paul, MN, Gaertner joined GAIN Sports to receive help with his prep school placement, off-season development, and to compete on the 2015 GAIN Sports Bus Tour. Following a successful prep season at Milford Academy, Gaertner signed with Colgate where he played as a true freshman in 2016. Entering the 2019 season, Gaertner was elected Team Captain.
